It is with great sadness that we announce the death of long-time OFS board member Violette Feigenwinter.
Violette joined the board in 1968 and was a key member for almost 30 years until her retirement in 1996.
As a board member, Violette helped organize and program the screenings of hundreds of films for la série française, the International Series and our retrospective series. These films were enjoyed by tens of thousands of members in both English and French.
Without a doubt, her greatest achievement was the creation of the French series for the 1968-69 season. For the first time in Ottawa, it became possible to view the many great French films of that era in V.O. (i.e., in French without English subtitles).
It also filled a cultural void for Ottawa’s Francophone community as the main source of quality French language films without subtitles in the city. A half century later, the series continues to run monthly at the ByTowne Cinema.
Violette’s excellent work was not limited to just Ottawa. She was well-known throughout Canada as an active supporter of cinema and the film society movement. In 1985, she received the “Oscar and Dorothy Burritt Award” honour from the Canadian Federation of Film Societies in recognition of her years of dedication and effort.
 On many occasions, through her work at the French Embassy, she also procured films for our screenings which were unavailable through normal channels and which we would not have been able to show otherwise.
On behalf of everyone at the Ottawa Film Society, we offer our sincere sympathies to Dominique, her son, and the family. We share your sorrow and we miss her dearly.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de Violette Feigenwinter, membre du conseil d’administration du Ciné-club d’Ottawa pendant longtemps.
Violette s'est jointe au conseil d'administration en 1968 et a été un membre clé pendant près de 30 ans jusqu'à sa retraite en 1996.
En tant que membre du conseil d'administration, Violette a aidé à organiser et à programmer les projections de centaines de films pour la série française, la série internationale et les séries retrospectives. Ces films ont été appréciés par des dizaines de milliers de membres en anglais et en français.
Sans aucun doute, sa plus grande réussite a été la création de la série française pour la saison 1968-69. Pour la première fois à Ottawa, il est devenu possible de visionner les nombreux grands films français en V.O. (c.-à-d. en français sans sous-titres anglais).
La série a également comblé un vide culturel pour la communauté francophone d'Ottawa en tant que source principale de films de qualité en français sans sous-titres dans la ville. Plus d'un demi-siècle plus tard, la série est toujours diffusée tous les mois au Cinéma ByTowne.
L'excellent travail de Violette ne s'est pas limité à Ottawa. Elle était bien connue partout au Canada en tant que partisane active du cinéma et du mouvement des ciné-clubs. En 1985, elle a reçu le prix « Oscar et Dorothy Burritt » de la Fédération canadienne des ciné-clubs en reconnaissance de ses années de dévouement et d'efforts.
À de nombreuses reprises, grâce à son travail à l'ambassade de France, elle a également trouvé pour nos projections des films qui n'étaient pas disponibles par les canaux normaux et que nous n'aurions pas pu montrer autrement.
De la part de tout le monde au Ciné-club, nous offrons nos sincères sympathies à Dominique, son fils, et à la famille. Nous partageons votre chagrin et elle nous manque profondément.

Our new and dramatically expanded Archives, "Back to the Future", are now on line!
After years of painstaking archaeological research, we have successfully unearthed and published material
that spans over sixty years of OFS history back to our 1954-55 season.
Warning, proceed with caution! You may get lost for days and lose many nights of sleep traveling back in
time to explore this treasure trove of OFS (and Ottawa) history!
This is a work in progress and we need your support and cooperation to advance it. We are still missing
programs from the early years of the OFS from 1937-1953, 1958-1960, and the more recent 1970-1973 seasons.
If you have any old OFS programs, film notes, posters or any other materials related to other film organizations
or the general film scene in Ottawa, please contact our Archivist, Kris Nawrotek, at 613-829-7422 or
knawrotek@gmail.com. We will lovingly scan them and put them up on our website to share with the world.
Your materials will be returned to you promptly.

à voyager dans le temps pour explorer cette mine de renseignements sur l'histoire du Ciné-club et même
d'Ottawa!
C'est un projet en cours et nous avons besoin de votre appui et de votre collaboration pour le mener à bien.
Il nous manque encore des programmes des premières années de 1937-1953, ainsi que de 1958-1960 et de
1970-1973. Si vous avez de vieux programmes, des notes, des affiches ou d'autres documents se rapportant à
d'autres organisations cinéphiles ou sur le cinéma à Ottawa, veuillez contacter notre archiviste, Kris Nawrotek,
